China announced a 2020 campaign to promote employment of people with disabilities living in poverty on May 17, according to a meeting held by the China Disabled Persons’Federation (CDPF) and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

The meeting also unveiled the theme of this year’s National Day for Helping the Disabled, which fell on May 17 -- helping impoverished disabled to secure a decisive victory in eradicating poverty and including them in a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

Initiated by the CDPF, an online service platform was established to promote disabled people’s employment and entrepreneurship, and to provide information about employment service providers, social organizations helping the disabled, online job fairs, e-commerce training and supporting measures and involved enterprises. It will also publicize the good experiences gained and role models who have emerged in the fight against poverty and advertises themed activities that help disabled college graduates find jobs.

Representatives from domestic job-hunting websites Zhaopin.com and 58 Tongcheng, e-commerce platform Weidian, microblogging platform Sina Weibo and human resources outsourcing company China Talent Group (CTG) shared their experience and practices in supporting the people with disabilities and promised to offer more job opportunities and engage more social forces to help them secure work.

In his speech, Li Zhong, vice-minister of human resources and social security, said the ministry has taken a group of measures to implement the Employment Promotion Law and deployed a policy package to boost employment.

Employment assistance programs, ranging from matching services between the employers and disabled job seekers to occupational tutorship and entrepreneurial support have benefited many people over the past 19 years, according to Li.

Some enterprises signed labor agreements with people with disabilities at the meeting.

The CDPF has spared no effort to help disabled people resume work and obtain employment locally or in nearby areas, expanded more channels to help the disadvantageous group get jobs, and assisted the enterprises employing people with disabilities to resume work and production, effectively reducing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on disabled job seekers.

The CDPF will also join hands with employment service providers, social organizations, human resources companies and employers to offer more job opportunities for the disabled.

Cheng Kai specified the requirements on promoting disabled people’s employment and the critical battle of poverty alleviation, saying that the federation will focus on stabilizing the employment of the disabled with a problem-solving stance.

Efforts will be made to engage government departments and more social forces to help lift the people with disabilities out of poverty, Cheng said, adding that disabled persons' federations should encourage the disadvantaged group to escape poverty through sharpening their vocational skills.
